Inland Water Transport

In Karnataka State the Inland Water Transport wing has been created under the Department of Ports in the years 1972 on the recommendation of Gokhale Committee and Bhagavathi Committee to look over the administration, maintenance, control and regulation of the Ferries and Waterways by providing modernized, Dumb boats, LCTs, FRP Boats and Mechanized Steel & Wooden boats.

Under Centrally sponsored scheme for the over all development of ferries in the state, following 7 Nos. of Inland Water Transport schemes have been proposed. As per guidelines of Central Government, Rs.75.86 crores revised estimate has been prepared for the Development of 7 schemes and submitted to Central Government to get sanction for the same and for the release of 90% financial assistance under Central sponsored scheme.

To carry out Techno – Economic survey study by M/s. Rites Ltd., Noida a sum of Rs.42.84 lakhs has already been paid to them and their physical achievement of survey target is still awaited.

During 2004-05  –   9,01,594 passengers 135.00 M.Tonne cargo and 83,928 different vehicles have been transported through 16 ferries run by the department of Ports and Inland Water Transport.
